What marvellous responses in such a short time, from so many of you! This 
underscores
the great value of continuing to support Matt's website.

Being inherently lazy and not wishing to try out all of your suggestions 
simultaneously,
I'll start with Remi's suggestion which seems either to dampen resonant
vibrations, or perhaps divide each spring into two lengths with much higher
resonant frequencies.
