Bob,

The gurgle is from "burping" the engine. You are supposed to ensure the "mags"
are off, take the top off the oil reservoir and turn the engine through by hand
until you hear the distinct gurgle in the oil reservoir. This indicates that
all the oil has been blown out of the crankcase and into the oil reservoir.
Now you can properly check the oil level. On my Europa, there can be half a
quart (half a liter) of oil in the crankcase. If you were to check the oil
level
without "burping" the engine, you may see the oil level as low when it really
isn't. You add a quart (liter) of oil and now you are half a quart (liter)
over-filled. Which after your flight will now reside across the bottom of
your aircraft.
