The welding wire is meant to ''find'' the position of the rib, and you ''eyeball'' down the exposed portion of the wire, as you would a snooker cue, and extend that line onto the upper wing skin, to the L / E. A powerfull light shining through the hole in the spar, [ with a blanket over your head, onto the leading edge area, as a Victorian photographer would have done] will also find you the rib position,,, ie the Redux bond line shows up as a dark shadow.
