of options to get GPS running.
I have a Dell Axim X50 PDA which I really like. SO, there are options of both
Bluetooth wireless GPS receivers, wired receivers, and buying a cheap GPS unit
to wire connect to the PDA. Then, the cheap GPS can be used to walk around in
the woods without getting lost or driving around in a car.
The wired route doesn't look as appealing as I'll already have headset/intercom
wires, a PTT on the yoke, etc. and having a PDA, interface cable, 12V power
supply cord and other bits also hanging about, I see a issue with trying to fold
charts and generally maintain sanity in the cabin without ending up a tangled
mess. But, the DeLorme GPS unit that plugs into the PDA via USB is inexpensive
enough to try out with the PocketPC software. Might not be a bad solution
to see how GPS will work on the PDA.
Otherwise, the Magellan Airmap 500 looks like a nice solution for basic VFR nav.
The PDA route works for me, but my wife has a Sony Clie' and it's a Palm device,
so she's S.O.L. for the handheld solution when she wants to fly.
